WANT TO CHEER AT NVOT?

You've come to the right place!

THE BASIC INFORMATION

NVOT Cheer has two different seasons: a Fall Football Sideline season, and a Winter Competitive Season.

Fall sideline cheers for the football team, and Winter partakes in competitions. The differences for a deeper understanding are listed below.

Both seasons have a JV and Varsity team and require tryouts, but do not have cuts (everyone will be on a team).

All teams have a high level of commitment! It is expected that you are there for every game and competition. Attendance is especially important for the Winter Competitive season since the routine depends on every member.

Fall teams will have a Cheer Camp taking place shortly after tryouts to learn that halftime routine, and Winter teams will have choreography taking place shortly after tryouts to learn the competition routine.

Fall and Winter are two separate teams! There is the possibility of not making Varsity for one team/season, and making it on the other in that same year.

FALL SIDELINE

  • It is a sideline team cheering for the football team.

  • Performs a halftime routine, sideline stunts, and of course, cheers!

  • The Varsity team has a game every weekend, cheering for both home and away games.

  • The JV team cheers for Freshman and JV home games only.

  • The season spans from September to November/early December, depending on how far the football team makes it into playoffs.

  • Tryouts are held in late August, and senior practices are held during the summer to learn sideline cheers and practice motions, jumps, and skills.

  • Practice is held after school every day, along with football games and tumbling practices.

WINTER COMPETITIVE

  • It is a competitive team, performing a 2:30 minute routine against other high school teams.

  • More focus on skills involving tumbling, stunting, and jumps compared to Fall.

  • The Varsity team has two competitions a week, one on Monday, and one on the weekend.

  • The JV team has one competition a week on the weekend.

  • The season spans from November to late February, with tryouts held in November.

  • The Varsity team will compete on both spring floor and dead mat (no springs), while JV only competes on spring floor.

  • Practice is held after school every day along with competitions and tumbling practices.

  • It is possible that practice will be held over winter and spring break, and you are expected to be there.

NOW WHAT?

1. DECIDE WHICH TEAM(S)

It is very common for NVOT cheerleaders to choose to be on both the Fall and Winter teams, but some people also decide to only be on one or the other. While Fall greatly depends on stunts and tumbling, it also very much concentrates on cheering loudly, and having sharp motions, while Winter is much more skill-based. Some factors to consider when deciding is if another sport you want to do at NVOT runs in the same season as Fall or Winter, and the schedule of other club/outside activities you are involved in. Attendance is very important, so make sure you are can commit to the team!

2. GET CHEER SHOES

If you don't already have them, you will need to get cheer shoes! These are required once on a team, and highly recommended for tryouts since they are made to be tumbled and stunted in. Below is a link to the shoes that many girls on NVOT use, the Nfinity Vengeance in white. This specific type is not required, but widely used!

3. HAND IN ALL PAPERWORK

All paperwork needs to be handed in BEFORE tryouts or you can NOT participate! Below are links to the two forms that need to be filled out and handed in to the school -- ORIGINALS ONLY, and make sure all information is labeled CHEER. Check Genesis after June 1st and you should receive an email from NVOT regarding health forms. A $50 ACTIVITY FEE must also be handed in with the paperwork.

4. PRACTICE YOUR SKILLS

While no prior experience is required to be an NVOT Cheerleader, it is greatly beneficial in tryouts if you already know some cheer terminology and skills. You can learn and practice the basics of motions, jumps, tumbling, and stunting on the SKILLS page!

4. ATTEND SUMMER PRACTICES AND TRYOUTS

If you are interested in cheering for the Fall season, you should attend the Summer Practices, which are led by seniors where you will learn sideline cheers and practice motions, skills, and jumps. They are held at Stone Point Park in OT for an hour, two times a week throughout July and August, leading up to Fall tryouts. These practices will outline the tryout process, and help you learn skills and cheers before tryouts begin. Make sure you follow the NVOT Cheer Instagram account linked below to see updates regarding these practices! The Instagram also contains videos of sideline cheers so that you can practice at home!

Lastly, Fall and Winter tryouts are held across 3 days, and where you will be practicing stunts, tumbling, cheers, and learn a dance. The attire is any athletic clothing (t-shirt/tank and shorts/leggings) along with white cheer shoes. At the end, you will perform a cheer, tumbling pass, jump, and stunt with your group!
