Types of Cheerleading

SIDELINE CHEER

  • Supports other sports (usually football and/or basketball)

  • Can include stunting and/or a halftime routine

  • Focus on being loud and energizing the crowd

  • Outdoors/indoors depends on the sport being supported

  • Season depends on the sport being supported (usually fall for football, or winter for basketball)

  • Generally less time commitment

COMPETITIVE CHEER

  • Team performs a 2:30 minute long routine, competing against other schools

  • Includes stunting, tumbling, jumps, and dance

  • Focus on skills and execution

  • Competes indoors on spring floor or dead mat (floor without springs)

  • Competitive season is usually winter-spring, but practice can be all year

  • Generally more time commitment
